FORT MASSAC STATE PARK

Posted by Meryl (proud pinay)

Last Saturday we went to Fort Massac State Park, Metropolis, Il. It is a very nice park to relax and enjoy the beauty of the nature surrounding it. It has a spacious parking lot with several fun outdoor opportunities available where you can spend time together with your family and friends like picnicking, camping, hiking, hunting, boating and fishing along the Ohio River. Or you can just relax and enjoy the overlooking beauty of the Ohio River. When we went there, some people were enjoying swimming in the river. There is also a visitor's center and office in the park.

FOUR FLAGS OVER FORT MASSAC. More than 5 centuries ago,the fort was under the control and ownership of the Spanish (1500's) and then sometime later the French took it over. Then the British took it over from the French, then the Americans took it from the British. It was 1974 when George Washington ordered the fort rebuilt and garrisoned. In the year 1908, the Fort Massac State Park was preserved and maintained and was designated the first Illinois State Park. What you are seeing now is a replica of the 1802 American fort. There are 2 barracks, officer quarters, 3 block houses, a well, and a stockade with fence in the fort.

It is a very nice vacation spot and a place to reminisce the rich history of the site.
Here are the pictures we took (scroll down please):
